SteamOS

SteamOS recently got two updates, both in the stable and beta branches. The Stable update brought with it security and stability updates, which is going to be helpful overall, while the Beta update brought with it more Steam Machine support and fixed nested desktop mode. On top of that, the Beta update fixed a regression with VRR-capable TVs. The beta update will be included in the upcoming massive 3.8.0 update, and I can’t wait.

You can download the updates yourself in the System Settings on the Steam Deck. Make sure your update channel is set to Beta or Preview for the beta update, while the stable update should just be available in any update channel.

  • Fixed a regression causing certain VRR-capable TVs to fail to work via a connected dock
  • Fixed a rare bug where switching to desktop mode may hang indefinitely

  • Even more support for upcoming Steam Machine hardware

    I liked the idea of the nested desktop. Especially since when you try things and have to switch often between game and desktop mode the deck after a while will not shut down the desktop mode correctly and games start to run more slowly or the fan has to work even harder.

    Sadly when I tried it many things weren’t working that flawless. Like copy paste and other things 9 often need when modding and try other things on the deck. But great there was an update so it came back into my mind and I will check it out
